ENGLAND’S EUROPEAN VACATIONS

ear gas, penalties and Christmas trees: six weeks before Euro 2016, Sport relives England’s European Championship campaigns

 An all-time high

Euro 2016 is a behemoth featuring 24 nations. Early Euros were a slimmer animal, however, featuring just four sides. Yes, four. World champions England qualified to join the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and hosts Italy at Euro 68.
Brilliantly, Italy knocked out the Soviet Union on a coin toss after their semi final finished 0-0 after extra time. England, however, lost 1-0 in a roughouse game against Yugoslavia, in which Alan Mullery booted Dobrivoje Trivic in the groin, becoming the first player to be sent off playing for England.
End result - Third
England beat the Soviet Union in the third-place match, with goals from Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst (above). Their best Euros finish, with the same number of wins as a coin.
winners - Italy
The final was drawn 1-1 first time around, thanks to an Angelo Domenghini equaliser, then settled with a 2-0 win for Italy in the replay in Rome two days later.
key player - Bobby Moore
With defensive shield Nobby Stiles out injured, England’s Rolls Royce and captain marshalled a defence that conceded just one goal in two matches.
