The Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride, on May 1, gives amateur riders the chance to experience the same course as the final stage of the pro tour, taking place after the end of Stage 3. With distances of either 119km, 80km or 40km, David Millar says it will challenge cyclists of all abilities.
“Sportives are brilliant,” says Millar. “Especially for the British, because roads are normally so busy. You’re riding on closed roads. For many, it’s the first time they’ll ride in bunches, or in groups, so it’s a completely different experience. And it’s supported [with marshals and feed stations].
“Sportives are something we should push for, because the level of participation we have now in this country is amazing. So we need to give people goals to go for. We have Ride London, and now this one. If we can get a couple more big ones, it’ll be cool.”
